10 Phrases A White Person Should Never Say To A Black Person

And why it’s plain wrong to say such things

I’m always surprised at how many times white people are capable of saying the most racist, hurtful, inappropriate, and at times awkward things to Black people.

Below, I have created a list of phrases that they have said to me and some of my Black family and friends. Let me be clear, these sentences should never — under any circumstances whatsoever, be said to a Black person because they are plain hurtful and offensive. I’m pretty much sure that if the same things were said to you, you wouldn’t be too happy either.

Here they are:

  1. Your Black ancestors may have been enslaved or colonized, but you aren’t any of those things. Why do you keep on complaining about racism, discrimination, and oppression when you have all your rights and freedoms.

This has got to be one of the most insensitive things one can say. Black people suffer from racism on a daily basis, that’s a fact. Whether or not they are aware of it is a different story. There are fact-based studies out there that validate that racism exists. Though we are not all enslaved or colonized today, we still pay a huge price for being Black.
